The 10 essential steps
1. Set your moving date well in advance — ideally with 4 to 8 weeks’ notice, especially for international destinations.
2. Make an inventory of everything you’re taking — list furniture, boxes, appliances, and special items such as bicycles, musical instruments, or artwork.
3. Decide what you won’t be taking — a move is the perfect opportunity to let go of what you no longer use. Donate, sell, or recycle.
4. Request quotes from at least two companies — compare not just the price but the service included, insurance, and contract terms.
5. Confirm the destination address — it may seem obvious, but an incorrect or incomplete address can cause delays and unexpected costs.
6. Handle the necessary documentation — for non-EU countries you may need customs declarations. Translowcost informs you in advance about what’s required.
7. Pack ahead of time — if you choose a service without professional packing, start packing your boxes at least a week in advance.
8. Set aside your essentials — documents, medication, chargers, clothes for the first few days, and personal valuables should travel with you, not in the moving vehicle.
9. Confirm logistical details at the destination — check whether there’s an elevator, the distance from parking to the entrance, and whether there are time restrictions for loading and unloading.
10. Communicate any changes to the moving company — a change in date, address, or volume should be reported as early as possible to avoid extra costs.
